New Name Reflects Company’s Ability to Power Predictive-Based Safety (PBS) and Identify New Metrics that Predict Construction Risk
Cambridge, Mass. — August 2, 2021 — Smartvid.io, a construction technology company that uses AI and advanced analytics to sharply reduce safety risk, has rebranded with a new name: Newmetrix. In addition, the company has expanded its executive team with the addition of industry veteran Chuck Pettinger as VP of Customer Success & Experience. Lastly, Newmetrix is announcing three new customers, Boldt, Iovino and nmcn demonstrating the power of analytics across multiple types of construction, from commercial to heavy & civil to industrial.
Newmetrix was founded in 2015 to apply artificial intelligence and analytics to construction challenges, and safety was chosen as the first application.
“The industry’s serious injury and fatality rate hadn’t improved substantially since 2008, and we thought this technology could help change that,” said Josh Kanner, CEO and Founder of Newmetrix. “We also knew that companies were already collecting a wide variety of data we could analyze in new ways to help make sure more people go home safely every day.”
Enter Vinnie, our AI, and Predictive-Based Safety (PBS)
The team developed Vinnie, Newmetrix’s AI, which has been trained on millions of construction-specific photos to teach it how to recognize hazards and context. Currently, Vinnie can identify more than 100 safety risks in image data, from work at height, guardrail, PPE and scaffolding issues, to even more difficult to detect ergonomic hazards such as chronic improper body positioning.
Today, Newmetrix’s team has turned to the next frontier in data analytics, leveraging AI & ML for Predictive Analytics. Over the last three years they have trained the new predictive module on over 12 centuries of data, leveraging a vast array of project information — payroll, safety observations, incidents, even weather data — to determine their impact on safety and predict where incidents will happen before they occur.
The Newmetrix platform has three products that reduce safety risk through increased engagement:
Predictive Analytics: Proactively identifies the 20% of your projects that will have 80% of incidents within the next week and provides specific actions to reduce that risk. Executives and project teams learn weekly which projects are at risk and what actions to take to reduce that risk.
Safety Monitoring: Creates new conversations by identifying up-to-date risk conditions and highlighting where to focus each week. AI reviews jobsite images to detect and tag safety hazards and positive behaviors. Data from this module and Safety Observations feed into Predictive Analytics.
Safety Observations: Increases engagement with an easy-to-use risk ranking feature, encouraging the documentation of both positive and negative conditions, removing the stigma of negative observations while reinforcing the right behaviors. Enables anyone on a jobsite to easily make safety observations and engage in conversations about safety.
Newmetrix has enabled construction companies like Suffolk, Shawmut, and Lithko Contracting to reduce recordable incident rates by up to 40%.
Newmetrix has also announced a new member of its executive team.
Chuck Pettinger, Newmetrix’ new VP Customer Success & Experience, has spent two decades managing predictive safety solution deployments and helping customers with process change for Predictive Solutions. He holds a Ph.D. in organizations psychology from Virginia Tech.
"Successful implementation of analytics at construction and industrial firms is a process and people challenge, not just a data and AI challenge,” Pettinger said. “The Newmetrix team and its product are doing the right things to help continue changing our industry. I’m really looking forward to helping our customers incorporate these powerful capabilities into their current processes to reduce risk and save lives."
Three new customers
The importance of safety risk data and analytics is being seen by industry leading firms like Boldt, Iovino, and NMCM who have all signed up as Newmetrix customers.
Boldt is a fourth-generation family and employee-owned commercial general contractor with more than 2,000 employees at 14 locations for a number of industries, from healthcare and education to automotive and public sector.
“Our company is committed to using data to improve our operational processes,” said Dave Kievet, President and Chief Operating Officer at The Boldt Company. “Safety was a natural starting point for us as we tap into the power of analytics to help us understand where risk is today and how we can reduce it tomorrow. This helps us stay safer and improve our bottom line.”
Iovino has more than four decades of construction experience, establishing itself as a leader in the civil, electrical, mechanical, track, remediation and demolition infrastructure space.
“Iovino is committed to using the best technologies to keep our workplaces safe,” said Gustavo Monne, CIO of Iovino Enterprises. “Newmetrix’s approach to gather our current data and use it with their AI to predict and prevent risk is proven to make us safer. That benefits our employees and our clients.”
Since 1946, NMCM and its more than 1,000 employees have delivered major built environment and critical national infrastructure projects across the UK.
"We are truly excited to be moving from insight and guesswork to the realm of predictive, making our data work harder for us,” said Nitesh Alagh, Health & Safety Lead, NMCN Plc. “Construction continues to be the highest risk industry when it comes to work-related fatal injuries in Great Britain. Even if we're able to just make incremental improvements to predict and prevent safety incidents, the impact will be significant. The prospect of incident and observation data becoming more meaningful and actionable will, in turn, encourage our colleagues to participate more actively in reporting and improve employee engagement in safety".
